not that this excuses it in anyway (I’m not a fan of cigarettes either) but it’s probably just a stress thing. they did a study on cigarettes and stress and generally industries where a lot of people smoke (restaurant business is number one, in case you were curious) have a high amount of stress to deal with. and you could make the argument that they have a really stressful job to try and live up to everyone’s expectations from the book.
again, it certainly doesn’t excuse smoking, but it might explain a little why they do it.

I said it before on Jackson Rathbone’s site. I too lost two people to smoking related illnesses. I don’t smoke because of it. But that is my choice.
We all have habits and personality traits that aren’t flattering. Ashley and Jackson smoke that is there vice. They could quit or they could not. It doesn’t matter. What does matter is that they portray our Alice and Jasper to perfection, they are both sweet, they both love their families, Jackson is wonderful to his fans, and both are talented people. That’s all that matters to me.
As for role models and all. I don’t expect celebrities to be perfect anymore than I expect my family and friends to be perfect. People need to stop trying to make celebrities from being the moral shapers of our world. Plus, it is already socially looked down upon to smoke in this country.

Ashley’s wig also looks pretty good. I have a feeling they will be doing some spikey goodness for us.
